Hi everyone,
I am wondering how much work it would be to replace the current email software stack that YunoHost is using (AFAIK Dovecot + Postfix) with Stalwart.
Stalwart looks like an awesome All-in-One Mail Server, fully written in Rust. Among other things, it is what Thunderbird has chosen to host their upcoming mail service (Thundermail).
There have been three proposals to package this software for YunoHost in the past (#1818, #2236, and #2364), and since the rejection reasons were that YunoHost already has an integrated mail server, I believe making Stalwart the integrated mail server could be a game-changer, and make maintenance way easier.
So far, I knew that YunoHost had integrated email capabilities, but I never understood how to use them, especially because I was afraid to be breaking things, given how delicate email hosting is. Instead, Stalwart can be fully managed via GUI, and it seems incredibly simple.
I imagine that replacing the whole mail stack probably is a major endeavour, if not a nightmare, but I think that it might be worth it considering the solidity of the project and the modern standards that Stalwart supports!
These slides provide a great overview of the arguments.
