YunohostNixOS Project

I’ve gotten NixOS curious. I run some systems with it and am playing with a server build.

My crazy idea is to make a sort of homelab setup in NixOS. I had to reinstall my setup from scratch one time and it was a massive pain in the butt. I would love to have my setup be ‘declarative’.

One of the coolest things about yunohost is the managing of users. I am stuck at this point in my setup right now.

So, if you’re interested in this sort of thing…or have any ideas to help me improve?

My repo where I’m testing things out. I need to make some sort of LDAP or some sort of authentication. Maybe it isn’t easy to do this sort of thing.

hmm cool links.

the selfhostblocks looks cool but it is super custom. it uses custom flakes which also scare me because i barely understand them. i guess i need to keep learning about NixOS. so far, i am only using the builtin services like services.nextcloud. i guess if you want lots more customizability you need to create your own flake wrapper.

it only has a few maintainers too, so i am scared to jump into something like that which i don’t fully understand.

i guess i need to just keep chipping away at this by myself and learn along the way.

Well, few maintainers also mean that you can become one of the main ones and that you can ask to be onboarded to understand better their choices and why they are not doing it in the way you thought about it.

As the saying goes: if you wanna go fast go alone but if you wanna go far go together.

Yunohost won’t be replaced by some scripts for tech people, it allows people like me to host stuff without knowing 0 coding and 0 about reverse proxy and stuff.

I hope it doesn’t sound harsh, I just want to see systems like yunohost to win

You misunderstand me, I don’t want to replace Yunohost as a whole. I am just testing it for myself to see if I can replicate my setup with NixOS. It is rather difficult though. Yunohost has great user/group account management.

Yunohost is an awesome project and I don’t want to see it go away
