I am experimenting with the possibility of using Yunohost - specifically Nextcloud’s contacts and calendar - with a dumbphone. What I am trying to do, is find a way to synchronise the contacts and calendar in any of the apps in Yunohost to a dumbphone that probably doesn’t know Caldav or Carddav, but is likely to understand Exchange Activesync. There was an app (Z-push) that was meant to do this, but it is no longer in the app catalogue. Does anyone have ideas or recommendations?
Also, it would be fun to see in what ways an old phone could communicate with a Yunohost box, and if there are other things beside calendar and contacts that could make the phone more useful and connected. What could we do with a dumbphone? Ideas welcome.
For Android smartphones, this is no problem, of course. DavX works well. However, I am talking about dumbphones, which typically have a keypad and use eg. S30 or S60 or some other embedded OS instead of Android. I should have clarified that better.
Oh, I have read too quickly.
I remember having an old Nokia that I was syncing with thunderbird using the Nokia desktop app over Bluetooth. That was over 7 years ago, so I don’t remember how I did it.
i would love to hear about how it goes. Even with a smartphone i mostly access ynh stuff (non-nextcloud online drive, notepad, rss aggregator) though prefered browser and do not use any calendar sync.
I heard about dumbphones running android you could sync to anything since its not that ‘dumb’ plenty of those of course sync to Google Calendar
KaiOS based dumbphones can sync to nextcloud calendar.
Thank you. Yes, I heard that KaiOS phones can sync to Caldav, but also that they are full of preinstalled bloatware… Which may of course be the case for all dumbphones. I guess what I am searching for is a way for Yunohost to serve existing calendars and contacts via Activesync to dumbphones or other devices.
i think sync something to a dumbphone might be the outer bounds of dumbphones. Or that’s just a feature phone. Maybe by exporting a calendar’s ICS/VCS or CSV file maybe, its not sync at all but. that might be the closest. There might be some grayish area of phones, “dumb to be in past-smart by features” compatible with vcs and ics files.
I use Activesync to sync contacts, agenda, mail on my Android phone but from yunohost, not nextcloud.
The SOGO app have an activesync “server” that work quite well.
I don’t understand why nobody use it, so easy like fill a mail address and password, choose what to sync and that’s all.
That’s interesting. I installed SOGO myself, but I don’t see at first sight that SOGO has an activesync server. I try the “links to this calendar” menu item, which shows Caldav, Webdav ICS and Webdav XML addresses. Is that what you mean?
nothing to do with SOGo, it work natively, just configure your activesync account on your phone like you did with Z-Push (SOGo_login@My_domaine.tld (or the domain where SOGo is installed))
Hey,
Why don’t you go to a smartphone without Google on it, but another OS, like LineageOS, e/OS/, CalyxOS…
I use a Fairphone with e/OS/ on it, have installed DAVx5 and can synchronize my Nextcloud contacts and calendar with my Fairphone.
Why not buy a compatible smartphone and install CalyxOS, e/OS/, LineageOS… there are guides to help you install one of these smartphone OS.
unfortunately as far as i know none of those android-like OSes are compatible with dumbphones (even ones that run Android). would be awesome to have at least one. no overlap of communities yet.
That would be awesome to see OS swaping on those dumb bricks. running postmarketOS on a dumbphone.
ps /e/os is fully integrated with nextcloud at home.
Just put your server during the configuration. you will have “all” murena cloud services like photo/files sync calendar contacts … what more ?
and with a tips #3689 thread on this forum you can have push notif for element and molly… maybe more apps
