Which ad blocker to choose? (PiHole, Technitium, AdGuardHome, …)

I would like to set up ad blocking, but on YunoHost we seem to be spoilt for choice.

There currently (at least):

I wonder what the pros and cons of each are and what (and why) people chose to use. I assume others might find this useful too.

Je voudrais installer un ad-blocker, mais j’ai le problem de choisir.

Je me demande quels sont les avantages et les inconvénients de chacun et ce que les gens ont choisi d’utiliser (et pourquoi). Je suppose que d’autres personnes pourraient également trouver cela utile.

Personnellement j’ai adguard home installé sur mon home server. J’ai juste paramètré le routeur pour utiliser mon serveur comme serveur dns. J’ai pas pu faire fonctionner pi-hole. Par contre je ne connaissais pas technitium dns.
De plus, j’ai adaway installé sur mon smartphone en mode root, et hblock sur mon pc Linux. Pour le pc Windows, j’ai modifié à la main le fichier hosts en y intégrant le hosts de StevenBlack.

I use Pi-Hole with unbound in order to have a recursive DNS resolver. I believe this can also be done with Adguard Home but I’ve had my setup for a long time with no compelling reason to change it. Pi-Hole is easy to install and has a UI which is pleasant to use. I know nothing about Technitium.

i thinks it’s all about personal preferences

but :

  • pi-hole is somewhat (but not much) more resource-intensive than AGH (PH uses PHP and AGH uses Go)
  • pi-hole doesn’t support automatic refresh of block list without a cronjob
  • both pi-hole and AGH have a really nice iOS app that i LOVE, see: https://rocketscience-it.nl/
  • AGH can be used as a DoH / DoQ DNS server
  • i don’t know technitium at all

btw I’m one of the two maintainers of the AGH yunohost package
