Describe your issue

Subject: Boot Blockage Issue - Raspberry Pi 5 with YunoHost - Stuck at systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service
To the YunoHost Support Team,
I am writing to report a persistent issue I’m encountering with my YunoHost instance, running on a Raspberry Pi 5. The system consistently freezes during the boot process, displaying a command prompt on the monitor after the systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service message.
System Details:

  • Hardware: Raspberry Pi 5 equiped with original fan and original power supply.
  • Operating System: YunoHost updated to 12.0.17
  • Storage: high-speed 256GB Sandisk microSD card (for OS) and an external 2TB Samsung SSD connected via USB (for data and backups).
  • Monitor Connection: HDMI
Server Usage: This server is primarily used for self-hosting various web applications (website, email), a series of web apps and for local media streaming within my home network.
My ISP is Orange RO which provides me with a static IP and i own a dot RO domain.
    Problem Description:
First to know is that the issue occured after a backup restoration. Then, upon every boot, after service initialization, the process halts, and a command-line prompt appears on the monitor. This blocks any further boot information from displaying and prevents the normal completion of the startup sequence. The last visible line before the prompt is consistently systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service.
While the system becomes accessible via SSH after a few moments (confirming that the boot process, though visually blocked, continues in the background), the local display remains frozen. I am unable to interact with it directly via monitor/keyboard until I intervene via SSH.
    Troubleshooting Steps Taken So Far:
  • Log Review: I have reviewed system logs (journalctl) for specific errors related to systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service or display/graphics issues, but I haven’t identified clear errors explaining the blockage.
  • System Updates: I have run sudo yunohost tools update and sudo yunohost tools upgrade to ensure all packages are up to date.
  • config.txt Verification: I checked the /boot/config.txt file for specific display settings that might cause conflicts, but found no unusual or modifiable settings that could resolve the issue.
    Impact:
Although the system is functional via SSH, the display freezing at boot is inconvenient and could be problematic for local troubleshooting or if SSH access were unavailable.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or troubleshooting guidance you can provide to resolve this display issue. I am available to provide any additional information or logs you may require.
Thank you in advance for your assistance!
    Sincerely,
    Bucuresti 20.06.2025
