Hi, is the current PixelFed package good to use with minimal admin interference? I noticed that a while back there were problems with uploading photos, also with importing from insta, and if I’m not mistaking issues with the permissions which had to be solved through manual chmod. I might start hosting myself but am a little uncomfortable if it requires a lot of command line to keep it running. So, how is the current experience using and maintaining PixelFed?
I tested the Instagram import without success.
Why not give it a try and let us know what works and what needs fixing?
Fair point… Still a little squimish to install something that might break though. I’ll look into it…
This is supposed to be fixed for a while. Yet I believe one person reported a similar issue in the latest months. At the very least one could say it should now be no more than a niche issue as we didn’t receive any other bug report of this kind for a while, and as manually testing didn’t bring such an issue.
That said, we can never guaranty that you will never have to troubleshoot your instance via command line or admin action - we only try our best to avoid it
I never tested this, and I can’t, so it’s depending on other people to check and handle this matter.
I have received good feedback on this recently, but I don’t have a broad view.
One “good” thing is that it’s likely that you don’t have to do it twice, so if it works out-of-the-box after you installed it, I guess it would do enough
The Instagram import does not work “by default”, and those who have made it work are a mystery. It never worked in my pixelfed.social account or in the two instances I tried to create, including my newest one. I tried using old export files from Instagram, or the most recent one, none worked.
After spending four days trying to install Pixelfed on my local machine to be able to debug properly and maybe correct it, or at least add some user-friendly error messages, it never worked, so I gave up.
I was finally able to “build” a test zip folder and upload it in my remote instance, but the image never appeared. The entry was in the database (the import_posts table), but the photo could not be found in the storage folder. Running the app:transform-imports was useless; this command helped some people, but not me. It looks like there might be a permissions problem because none of the uploaded media is saved in the folder. However, I don’t know how to fix it. I tried some chmods, but they didn’t work.
