Nohost - for long time use?

Discuss

Many thanks to all the developers — my server worked immediately!
Now I’m wondering:
Can I use [myname].nohost.me indefinitely, or should I switch to a paid domain in the near future?

Welcome :waving_hand:

You can use the nohost domain as long as you want but there are some downsides, like the fact that you can’t have a proper mail config for subdomains (e.g. docs.myname.nohost.me) so in the long term I’d buy a proper domain.

Hi,

Yes you can use this domain for a long time, but indefinitely depends of the yunohost infrastructure, so if the project is dead, then your domain is dead too. But yunohost is alive, so don’t panic!

It greatly simplifies things to use nohost.me subdomain, like you say, it worked immediately.

Also, you can stay with it without major risks - Mine has more than 7 years and all work very well with a free yunohost subdomain. (need some tweaks for mail if you don’t have ipv6 reverse dns)

@Tho : Could you tell in which case we need a proper mail config for subdomains? Is it useful for personal use?

If it is useful for personal use, is the subdomains can use the principal domain to send mails? I’m thinking about applications that needs to send automatic mails and can be installed on a subdomain. I don’t use this type of apps but it can be the case for some users.

You could live without, but the apps won’t be able to send a mail to you users if thy are using another mail than the one from YunoHost.

TBH I lived ≈ 2-3 yers with a nohost domain before buying one.

In theory it’s possible but in practice it’s more complicated because it’s not easily parametrable on a per user/instance basis
