I have delved into that and finally found out an oversight in our deregistration system. Basically you can remove then recreate domains, but the BIND NS server never gets its records deleted. So indeed, right now records do not age out.

I cannot commit on a timeline for the resolution, as I need to tread carefully to not induce downtime on our thousands registered domains. At least we know and understand the problem now.
