Description of my issue

Hey, I noticed, that my Mastodon Backups are getting bigger and bigger, i is barely used but gains Multiple GB very quickly
Mastodon itself say, that it would only use 237 MB.
But the Backup is 20 GB big.

So why does it take so much space?
Does anyone know, how I can prevent that from happening?

I suppose you could open the archive and check what’s weighting so much

As a temporary workaround : you could compress your backups, manually (using for instance zstd YourBackupArchive, or another algorithm but this one is one of the faster that compress a lot, see How to Use Zstandard Compression on Linux (With Commands) - Linux Nightly) or automatically using Archivist app (and choosing to use compression).

That won’t solve the source of the issue, but at least you will save ton of space.

Note : except if most of the backup contains pictures/videos, as they are already compressed.
