How is your network setup?

Hello,

We are working hard on YunoHost 13 migration and we want to know more how the network is configured in your instances.

Which mechanism is in use to configure network on your instance ?

  • /etc/network/interfaces
  • netplan
  • systemd-networkd
  • NetworkManager config ???
  • an other method (for example scripts)
  • i don’t know
0 voters

Could you share the result of those commands ?

Be careful on those 3 commands to replace wifi password, ip address, and mac address (in interface name)

cat /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces.d/*
cat /etc/netplan/*
cat /etc/systemd/network/*
systemctl status networking
systemctl status systemd-network
systemctl status systemd-resolved
systemctl status NetworkManager
ip -br link show |cut -d" " -f1
grep -i "net.ifnames" /boot/grub/grub.cfg
cat /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules | sed -E "s/[0-9a-f:]{17}/aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff/"

About

The goal here is to know more on yunohost 12 and 13 instances in order to detect potential network issues after upgrading onto the next major version.

On my rpi

Bon dev

Hello, I replied directly in the main thread Issue · GitHub

BTW, “hardly working” => “je travaille à peine”, “working hard” => “je travaille durement”

Thanks sadly, i am not a good english speaker, i try to remember that

Thanks @crustyourmind i see that you have old non predicatble interface name (eth0), i think there is a risk on upgrading to trixie and rebooting after… And i see that you doesn’t to have in your boot or udev a mechanism to keep old interface names…

But i am not sure of that, do you face some issue on that during the 11->12 upgrade ?

Ce rpi est relativement neuf, il n’a connu que Yunohost 12

Sur mon VPS (il y déjà connu des upgrade de version de yunohost)

Hello,
My set-up is a pure debian install with Yunohost on the top, following carefully the documentation at On top of Debian | Yunohost
But Yunohost was installed on 2018 and since then has been updated/upgraded through Yunohost migration tools.
So you may know better than I what tools Yunohost is using to configure network  !
All the best :waving_hand:

source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*

The loopback network interface

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

The primary network interface

allow-hotplug enp2s0
iface enp2s0 inet dhcp

cat: '/etc/network/interfaces.d/*': No such file or directory

cat: '/etc/netplan/*': No such file or directory

cat: '/etc/systemd/network/*': No such file or directory

In fact we don’t, cause you made an install “on top of debian”. If you have done it with iso or arm image, we could deduce some info, but with the “on top of debian” method it depends how you get the debian (debian VPS ? debian install from iso ? ).

Yunohost doesn’t manage ethernet network. It manages firewall, dns resolver, VPN and hotspots apps.

The goal here is to see if we should do something on managing ethernet network (or wifi) and see if during the migration some people could loose network access due to the migration to predictable interface name (it was already an issue in 11->12 migration). The difficulty is

  • with VPS provider, cause they use different tips to manage this problem
  • and users who already had the problem and solved it by doing some conf to keep ethX interface name

Here the results :

cat /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces.d/*
cat /etc/netplan/*
cat /etc/systemd/network/*
source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*

allow-hotplug eth0

I would add that I use openVpn (through FND VPN service) to manage my connection and have my domain connect to this ip. It allows me to have a dedicated ip even ìf I move my server and bypass the box port restriction and also not having my home ip exposed.

Nicolas

Worth the effort beyond the recommended pre-reboot detection?
Typical problem?: After a hyped change got pushed through, it becomes clear the advertised solution “predictable network name” isn’t predictable at all? (no universal solution at all?)

It replaces a potential ordering uncertaincy with plugable network adpaters accross reconfigurations, with a general naming uncertaincy for network adapters accross installs and hardware/software types?

In containers e.g., there isn’t any network setup, so there is nothing do for yunohost to support anyway (as naming depends on the containering software).

Interestingly, containers seem to allow to steer clear from these pitfalls to some extend (5. Issues to be aware of for trixie — release-notes documentation) and from the “teaching/using of MS systemd/linux” as a fix to whatever currently hyped problem that never broadly existed traps (instead of using and improving the modular and universal GNU/Linux “unix” shell tool philosophy to fix the problem [by persisting the initial names (enumeration order) by default]).

it’s predictable, but yunohost doesn’t manage the network config , so even if we could deduce the new interface name, it’s not enough to update network configuration in a secure way.

cat /etc/network/interfaces /etc/network/interfaces.d/*

# Here I let the acab, cause I saw another one and it make me laugh and happy. I love IPv6 for that kind of stuff.
