How does Paperless-NGX share work?

On the application page for Paperless-NGX under Manage labels and tiles, there is a section for “share”. Is that supposed to be a Samba share where I can attach my scanner and send documents directly into Paperless-NGX? I assume you need the Samba app installed to make that work? I spent the last 2 days trying to get the Samba app to work and I can’t access the shares no matter what I try, neither with my Linux desktop or my Brother scanner. With or without Samba, when I click on the link for the Paperless-NGX share I get a 404 file not found. If I can get an understanding of how it works, I will report back with necessary error messages and logs if I can’t make it work. Thanks.

Well, it wants me to choose 2 tags and I see neither paperless-ngx nor samba… not sure I’m understanding what to do there either.

Ok… on edit, I could find paperless-ngx so I deleted the _others tag. Then it told me I had to choose an app tag, so I guess whatever paperless-ngx I chose was not an “app tag”.

Welcome!

No, it has nothing to do with sending files to Paperless NGX. The “Share” you see there is the permission to access the path under which all share links are created with Paperless-NGX. The share links look like this https://your.domain.example/share/ and the permission protects the /share bit. It is public by default, since, well, it’s for sharing.

I suppose that is incorrect. The Samba app is to configure a Samba server. Paperless NGX needs to be a client in your case.

Being not an expert in Paperless NGX, can you summarize what you understood from its documentation, and what you have tried so far? (be precise, especially if there is some configuration to do)

I think you were searching how to configure the input directory and found a label named “Share”, which can very well be taken to mean “Samba share”.

I looked up the Paperless NGX site, and from there the link to the known-working scanner list. Above it is mentioned:

I didn’t have time yet to read the rest of the page, but if you haven’t read it yet there might be a pointer there.

Good luck!

From the Paperless-NGX documentation:

" The consumption directory

The primary method of getting documents into your database is by putting them in the consumption directory. The consumer waits patiently, looking for new additions to this directory. When it finds them, the consumer goes about the process of parsing them with the OCR, indexing what it finds, and storing it in the media directory. You should think of this folder as a temporary location, as files will be re-created inside Paperless-ngx and removed from the consumption folder.

Getting stuff into this directory is up to you. If you’re running Paperless on your local computer, you might just want to drag and drop files there, but if you’re running this on a server and want your scanner to automatically push files to this directory, you’ll need to setup some sort of service to accept the files from the scanner. Typically, you’re looking at an FTP server like Proftpd or a Windows folder share with Samba."

This is why I was incorrectly assuming the /share I saw on the Yuno Paperless app had something to do with that, because I hadn’t gotten that far in the documentation/process yet. I have a Brother ADS-4300N scanner sending files to a Samba share on a standalone Linux server with no problem. I have the Paperless-NGX app running on my Yuno server and I can drag/upload documents to it with no problem. So I thought the next step would be to get Samba working on the Yuno server so I could do a test run with my scanner, then figure out how to apply that to the consumption directory on the Paperless app. However, I cannot make Samba work on the Yuno server for love nor money, so I thought if something was built into the Paperless app where it would accept files directly from my network, I would try to understand that process before I wasted more time. Thanks for the reply.

I suppose that is incorrect. The Samba app is to configure a Samba server. Paperless NGX needs to be a client in your case.

I don’t see the difference. I have a Samba server set up on my network. I push the button on my scanner and a document appears in the smb share on that server. I’d like to set up Paperless-NGX with an smb share so when I push the button on my scanner, the document appears in the smb share on my Paperless-NGX instance. Isn’t that the same thing? I like the Yuno interface, but it somewhat hides the inner workings similar to a desktop environment and I don’t know if what I want to do is supported or will even work. I want to set up Samba on the Paperless-NGX app to accept documents from network clients but so far I have not been able to get Samba to work under Yuno. I realize that’s a separate issue and I’ll try to work that out in another post.

Edit: I shouldn’t say “I have not been able to get Samba to work under Yuno”… So far I have not been able to connect to an smb share I set up with a linux client or my scanner… Samba may be working as intended under Yuno. I think I’ve got my desktop and my scanner working correctly as I can connect to my stand-alone Samba server, but I can’t connect to my Yuno server. That obviously doesn’t mean it’s not working. My apologies, I didn’t mean to imply there was something wrong with Yuno or the Samba module.
