Description of my issue

Hello there,

I’m a relatively new user to Yunohost, simply using it for photo and document hosting and sharing on an old mac mini.
So far, I’m satisfied with how Nextcloud, Vaultvarden and OnlyOffice work
To complete my transition from GAFAM to self-hosting for my simple needs, I now have two remaining needs:

  1. set-up an automatic back-up system on a separate server (in a different location).
  2. set-up a “continuity” system, so that if my main server fails (for ex, because there’s temporarily no more internet connection) the “back-up” server turns into the “main” server and allow me and my kins to keep on using the hosted services.

I was wondering if using the Borg client (on the main server to be backed-up) and Borg server (on the back-up server) could fullfill both of my needs? Or is there another configuration that you would advice to achieve these two goals?
Thx for your advices!

I have two servers and a 3/2/1 backup strategy for this reason. On my main server wired into my router I have an external drive to which I borg backup nightly. My secondary server is setup in my shed within WIFI range running borg and receiving weekly backup. If my house burns down, the detached shed should be fine and I can turn that server into a main server. If you don’t have a detached shed, you can use one of the many offsite borg services or find a fellow selfhoster to hold your borg backup.
