☢ Compromised Certificate Authority, upgrade system package AND your devices ASAP!

:uk: An X.509 certificate authority has been compromised.

Fixed packages are now available so you need to perform YunoHost system upgrade as soon as possible AND TELL YOUR USERS TO UPDATE THEIR DEVICES.

  • via the Web UI: go at https://domain.tld/yunohost/admin/#/update, click “Retrieve available updates”, and then “Upgrade” under the “System” section
  • via SSH: sudo yunohost tools update && sudo yunohost tools upgrade system

IF you’re still using Yunohost 11 (?!!!), you should apply the patch manually (and consider upgrading to Yunohost 12, which will soon no longer be supported) :

sed -i \
  -e 's|^mozilla/emSign_ECC_Root_CA_-_G3.crt|!&|' \
  -e 's|^mozilla/Comodo_AAA_Services_root.crt|!&|' \
  /etc/ca-certificates.conf && update-ca-certificates

To test if you are protected or not:

curl https://dv-g3b-emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com/
curl https://dv-g3b-aaa-emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com/

If you see Your client successfully connected to the site. That's bad! : your server is still vulnerable.

  • via SSH: sudo yunohost tools update && sudo yunohost tools upgrade system

SI vous utilisez encore Yunohost 11(?!!!). Vous devriez patcher manuellement (et songer à mettre à jour vers yunohost 12 qui ne sera bientôt plus supporté):

sed -i \
  -e 's|^mozilla/emSign_ECC_Root_CA_-_G3.crt|!&|' \
  -e 's|^mozilla/Comodo_AAA_Services_root.crt|!&|' \
  /etc/ca-certificates.conf && update-ca-certificates

Pour tester que ça fonctionne:

curl https://dv-g3b-emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com/
curl https://dv-g3b-aaa-emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com/

Si vous voyez Your client successfully connected to the site. That's bad! le serveur est encore vulnérable.

I’m on 12.1.41.2; my system appears vulnerable (even after reboot), and there are no updates available.

Bonjour,

Thanks for the warning.

I’m on 12.1.41.2; my system appears vulnerable (even after reboot), and there are no updates available.

I have the same issue here running 12.1.41.2 (stable) but not getting any offered updates despite reloading/refreshing the package cache …

@NathanU @Vinz are you on an arm board ?
Have you received the update now ?

I have the same situation, amd64 machine, did the critical php update earlier and that included ca-certificates too, but it’s not clear if the system is still vulnerable.
Edit: ca-certificates is at version 20250419~deb12u2, one of the patched versions.

Hi @ljf and thanks for the assist :folded_hands:

are you on an ARM board?

Yes, this is a Raspberry Pi.

Have you received the update now ?

No I don’t think so, the curl command still returns the problematic message and I still see the affected certs in my cert store:

$ cat /etc/ca-certificates.conf| grep -E 'mozilla/emSign_ECC_Root_CA_-_G3.crt|mozilla/Comodo_AAA_Services_root.crt'
mozilla/Comodo_AAA_Services_root.crt
mozilla/emSign_ECC_Root_CA_-_G3.crt

Do you have the version of the CA cert package which has the fix?

Edit: I have applied the manual mod to ca-certificates.conf until I get the package update. Still welcome the updated package version info.

Salut,
Faut-il redémarrer le serveur ?

I’ve received the PHP update a few hours ago, but I’m not aware of an update related to X.509 cert. I’ve just checked again. Maybe it was installed automatically though. The logs are short and the last one’s are filled with automatic updates. So I can’t know.

Not vulnerable.

A certificate error means the client does not trust the compromised intermediates.

cf. https://emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com

No, it’s a VPS. I still have not received an update.

There has been an update before the php one.
Maybe check:
grep ca-cert /var/log/dpkg.log

@NathanU , @Vinz or everybody who have already done the update and still see the <h1>hello</h1> answer for curl https://dv-g3b-emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com/

Could you run :

cat /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*

@ljf thanks again for your help, I should be able to get that content later today.

Is there a central repository showing which contents those files should have on a default YNO installation? That would allow to quickly check we are not missing package repos, etc…

@ljf Sure:

$ curl https://dv-g3b-emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com/
Your client successfully connected to the site. That's bad!
$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*

Running 12.1.41.2 on a Raspberry Pi 2, update page shows “Tous les packages système sont à jour !”

@ljf here are the files on my server:

As of tonight, I have refreshed the package lists and picked up a new round of php-related package updates but nothing related to the certificates (I still run with the manual override).

I cannot seem to find which package owns the /etc/ca-certificates.conf file:

$ dpkg -S /etc/ca-certificates.conf
dpkg-query: no path found matching pattern /etc/ca-certificates.conf

The closest I could find is the update-ca-certificates binary, here is its associated package status:

$ which update-ca-certificates | xargs dpkg -S
ca-certificates: /usr/sbin/update-ca-certificates
$ dpkg -l ca-certificates
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name            Version          Architecture Description
+++-===============-================-============-=================================
ii ca-certificates 20250419~deb12u1 all Common CA certificates

In theory, sury announced that arm php packages are patched, don’t know why it’s not the case, maybe due to bookworm ?
