Describe your issue

Hi, in the Yunohost doc I only see mentions of VPS as a option Yunohost installation. The same is true for the options on the forum.

I was previously used digital ocean droplets, Linode, and Cloudways. Now after I get a chance to use Yunohost, I really like it. And I specailly appreciate the support you offered here. Now I am also considering use a Kimsufi server provided by OVH.

I don’t know much about servers, but I trust that Yunohost will work the same either it is a VPS server or Bare Metal server. Am I right?

If I choose Bare Metal, not VPS what are the other things I will need to do.

I run Yunohost on bare metal. In the documentation there is an option “Regular Computer”.

I run a Yunohost on a small Kimsufi bare metal since 2018

I also use a Kimsufi, the only thing I remember is some configurations to have an IPv6 avalaible, I have use this topic (french) Mettre en place l'IPv6 sur un Kimsufi - mondedie.fr

You don’t need to do anything differently. Much of the process is the same:

  1. Install Yunohost
  2. Configure your NAT ⇾ port-forward the required ports to the local IP of your bare-metal server
  3. Setup DNS records if you are using a custom domain. If you are using a yunohost managed DynDNS then everything will be setup for you by the platform.
  4. Install the required apps
  5. Profit

I may be missing some details in my answer, but I hope you get the general idea. You already used it so you would know the details.

Thanks very much everyone for your sharing and input.

I believe according to all your suggestion, I need:

  • Install Debian 11 (Bullseye) (with kernel >= 3.12)
  • Install Yunohost
    Then follow vulture’s suggestions of

I don’t get the Profit part, what does this mean?

Do I need to set up anything to do the automatic backup?

Looking forward to more suggestions if you got any. Thanks in advance.

You don’t need to do backups. It depends how dangerously you like to live.

I would suggest reading the Documentation and then asking questions here.

There are built-in Yunohost backups you can run, or run something else like Borg Backup or Restic.
